aims and hypothesis

• research aims - statement of the studies purpose
• null hypothesis - what you will assume is true during the study - often it is that there is no difference
• alternative hypothesis - if data forces us to reject the null hypothesis - rely on alternate hypothesis
• directional hypothesis - hypothesis that predicts a difference in results
• non-directional hypothesis - would predict a difference but not say the difference of the direction
• iv - directly manipulated
• dv - affected by changing the iv
• extraneous variables - any variable other than iv that could affect the dv
• operationalisation - shows how the variable will be measured
• directional - based on previous research - suggest which one will do better
• non directional - no previous research to judge which way it will go
