  • Police brutality is a problem against protestors on the news.
    In cities like Los Angeles, police brutality continues to be a problem.
    The US Justice system decided that because Mexican-Americans weren’t white, they couldn’t own he land that belonged to them originally.
  • Caesar Chavez- Farm worker, started the National Farm Worker’s Association: pushing for better pay and working conditions for farm workers.
    Bracero Program still happening, extremely low pay and poor conditions, broke child labor laws, exposing workers to deadly chemicals.
    Chavez went to congress to end the Bracero Program, it worked.
  • Chavez travels the country to form different strikes in various states to support farm workers, “Si, Se Puede”.
  • MALDEF- NAACP for Chicano Movement. Work on voting rights, immigration laws, child laws, etc.
    The Chicana Movement- faced forced sterilization of Latina women across the country (injections to kill hormones, tying tubes, non-consensual hysterectomy)
    Would tell women they were getting a different procedure, only explain in english, not Spanish.
  • Chicanas sued California, court sided with the women, law now requires people be given well-informed descriptions of procedures in their native language.
  • Chicano Blowout- group of students get together, one group is The Brown Berets
    1968- these groups organized walkouts (blowouts) and thousands of students would walk out of their classes and schools. 8 organizers of the Blowouts, 1 being a teacher, were arrested. Police abused them.
    Demanded Bilingual education, history that taught their native history, wanted arts programs, new libraries/buildings, schools refused.
    To this day, 5 high schools in Los Angeles have the highest dropout rates in the country.
