  • USSR : Reorganisation and Resistance
    1. Stalin delegated control of the Red Army to experienced and competent generals
    2. Communist Party officials were banned from interfering with military decisions.
    3. Harsh discipline was introduced to stop troops from retreating.
    4. The Red Army created its own specialist tank armies and air force
    5. Specialist units were created and trained to listen into and disrupt German radio signals.
    6. Radio communications were adopted and radio placed in all tanks and aircrafts to facilitate battle.
  • USSR Resource and Production
    1. Major industrial complexes were moved eastwards
    into the interior, away from the front line - including 25 million workers and their equipment.
    2. Workers were pushed to hit high quotas - only way they could get food.
    3. Focused on producing small range of reliable weapons in vast quantities
    4. Overall, Soviets managed to produce 1.5x aircraft and 2x tanks compared to the Germans.
  • USSR : Soviet Entry into Pacific War
    1. USSR was largely focused on the war with the Germans. But Stalin had promised Roosevelt that USSR would join in the war against Japan after the Germans were defeated.
    2. In August 1945, USSR declared war against Japan and launched an invasion into Manchuria. The large Soviet presence so near to Japan also contributed to Japan's decision to surrender.
