  • When draft terms of the treaty emerged in may 99 there was shock and disgust in Germany. The reivhstag was forced to accept the terms of the treaty of Versailles in June 919 as Germany did not have military capacity to resist the allies fuelling the stab in the back myth- many Germans felt the democratic government in Germany was weak and spineless.

  • territorial losses
    Germany lost 13% of its territory under the Treaty of Versailles, including areas such as Alsace-Lorraine which was returned to France, and West Prussia and Posen which returned to Poland. The reunification of Germany and Austria was now forbidden, and the Rhineland became a demilitarised zone. All of Germany's colonies were now controlled and supervised by countries under the League of Nations. Collectively, Germany's lost territory accounted for 6.5 million people (12% of its population), 15% of its agricultural production and 15% of its coal.
  • disarmament
    Germany had to abolish conscription and reduce its army to 100.000 men under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was not allowed tanks, large guns, military aircraft, or submarines. The German Navy was limited to 6 battleships, 6 cruisers and 12 destroyers
  • war guilt and reparations
    Germany had to sign a War Guilt Clause, which acknowledged that Germany was responsible for the war and the damage it caused. As a result, Germany had to pay 'reparations' - a sum of money which in 1921 was fixed at £6,600 million. Germany was able to make significant payments in kind', through coal etc. All coal production in the Saar region of Germany was given to France.
