Digestion of lipids

Cards (3)

  • Lipases
Hydrolyse the ester bonds in triglycerides to form fatty acids and monoglycerides
  • Digestion of lipids
    1. Bile salts produced and stored in gall bladder released into small intestine
    2. Emulsifies large fat globules turning them into smaller droplets
    3. Increases the surface area that can be exposed to lipase
    4. Monoglycerides and fatty acids stay attached to bile salts forming micelles
  • Absorption of lipids
    1. Micelles hit epithelial cells and break down, monoglycerides and fatty acids released by simple diffusion
    2. Both transported to SER where they recombine to form a triglyceride
    3. Turn into a vesicle, RER makes protein which joins vesicle, takes to Golgi apparatus
    4. Bind to cholesterol and proteins to form chylomicron
    5. Travel to cell membrane by exocytosis
    6. Enter intercellular space of cappileries called lacteales
