Eoin MacNeill tried to cancel the Easter Rising after the Aud( shape of weapons smuggled from Germany that were supposed to be used for the rising) was captured and Roger Casement was arrested. MacNeill believed the Rising would fail without the arms and ammunition that were being brought into Ireland aboard the Aud.
The rising ended in military failure for various reasons.
The planning of the rising was haphazard as communication among the military council and IRB was poor. Originally it was planned for volunteers in the country would take part in the rising. However because of MacNeill’s countercommandingorder it didn’t happen. The fighters were mostly settled in Dublin, which made it easier to suppress. The rebels were outnumbered. The rebels amounted to around 1200 and the British troops amounted to around 16,000.
The British army had better weapons and ammunition such as modern rifles. The rebels were at a disadvantage as he didn’t have fresh arms and ammunition from the Aud,as it was capture. So they relied solely on old German rifles. In conclusion the rising ended in military failure as the rebels were outnumbered and outgunned so their defeat was inevitable.
Some people believe that 1916 should be celebrated because they think that the leaders and those who fought in the Rising were courageous people and that their fight led to Irish independence. Other people believe that the 1916 leaders should not be celebrated because the Rising caused a lot of death and destruction at the time and it later inspired the paramilitary groups who fought and killed many people during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
An appropriate way of commemorating this event would be creating statues for the nine rising leaders of the Easter rising Joseph Plunkett,Éamonn Ceannt,Pádraig Pearse etc.Placing the statues in Dublin would serve as a reminder of their sacrifice. Finally, this statue should accompany plaques to provide context for visitors about the rising and the roles of the leader.
