  • The first cause of WW2 was the Treaty of Versailles.
    The Germans were forced to sign a wr guilt clause accepting full responsibility of WW1. The Germans resented this. As a result of the Treaty they Germans couldn’t enter the Rhineland,they lost the polish corridor and they couldn’t form a union with Austria, the German Army was also reduced to 100,000 men.
  • 2nd cause of WW2 was Hitlers foreign aims he wanted to dismantle the treaty of Versailles, and form a German Empire known as the Third Reich. This was a under the policy Lebensraum,living space.
  • 3rd Cause of WW2 was the Munich Conference in 1938. Hitter wanted to claim the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. So BritIan,France,Italy and Hitler met in the conference to sort the issue out. The Czechs were forced to hand over the land. (Sudetenland)
  • The final cause was when Germany invaded Poland on the first of September 1939. 2 days later Britain and France declared War on Germany despite their policy of appeasement.
  • Developments in Warfare
    Blitzkreig,lightening war was a method of warfare that was used by the Germans to invade countries. This tactic involved bombing using the Luftwaffe (German airforce) followed by the panzer tanks and infantry.
    The nuclear bomb was a destructive bomb developed by Manhattan Project. It was used in Japan in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
  • Country - United Kingdom
  • WW2 significantly impacted the population of Uk. New technologies like bombs and aircrafts like the luftwaffe meant that cities far away from front lines ( where soldiers were) could be targeted by bombing raids. Germany bombed many cities in UK like Coventry and Belfast. London was the city that was worst hit. The attack on London was called the blitz. When bombing raids were spotted air raids would go off and people would hide in basements, bunkers and underground stations to escape the bombings.
  • There were curfews and blackouts at night to try to make it harder for the German pilots to find the cities. Children from the cities were sent to live with families in the countryside as it was safer there. To sum it up over 70,000 civilians were killed in Uk during the war.
  • Operation Barbarossa - when Nazi invaded Russia/USSR
  • D-Day landing - deliverance day (Pearl harbour,hawaii)
  • scorched Earth - destroying anything useful to the enemy (crops,roads,railways and communication lines).
  • The Battle of Stalingrad was fought between the Germans and Russians. The battle is significant because it was one of the largest battles ever fought and lasted six months. This battle marked the turning point of the war against Hitler's army. It was when the Germans had reached their highest point in the war. The Russian victory here led to the defeat of the Nazis.

  • D-Day
    • Operation Overlord: On 6th June 1944, Allied forces landed in Normandy, France. By August, the Allies liberated Paris from the axis
  • The Battle of Stalingrad
    • From 1942-1943, the Red Army defended Stalingrad, cutting off German supplies. The German Sixth Army surrendered in February 1943, marking a turning point.
  • Operation Barbarossa
    • In June 1941, Germany launched a three-pronged attack on the Soviet Union. The Soviet scorched earth tactic and harsh winter halted German advances.
  • Operation Dynamo
    • The British had sent troops in order to help France
    • Refers to the mass evacuation of 300,000 Allied troops
    • Lasted from 27th May 1940 to June 4th 1940
    • British and French troops evacuated from Dunkirk beach
    • Germans were taking over France and there was nowhere to retreat
