  • UDF campaign was well organised compared to the ANC campaigns of the 50s - they organised leaflets, posters and door-to-door visits
  • Ideals were the same as the ANC - Albertina Sisulu (wife of Walter Sisulu) played a large role in the UDF
  • Revived Interest in ANC - increasing calls for release of Mandela
  • At voting time, the boycott was successful - in elections of August 184 29% of coloureds and 19% Indians voted - in black councils 21% (some places even lower)
  • Man elected mayor of Soweto had 1,115 votes despite Soweto having a population of 2 million
