Cards (3)

  • apparatus:
    • eye protection
    • emery paper
    • variable resistor
    • copper sulfate solution
    • dc power supply
    • propanone (fume cupboard)
    • distilled water
    • copper foil (electrodes)
    • mass balance
  • method- copper electrodes
    1. clean copper foil with emery paper and label cathode and anode.
    2. measure and record the mass of each electrode and fill a beaker with copper sulphate solution.
    3. adjust the variable resistor to give a current of 0.2A, leave for 20 minutes.
    4. turn power off and remove electrodes from the beaker, gently rinsing with distilled water and dipping them into propanone.
    5. shake the propanone off and measure the mass of the dry electrodes.
    6. repeat with different currents, and record changes in mass using a table.
  • method 2- inert electrodes
    1. set up circuit as shown in diagram
    2. observe what happens at each electrodes (products)
    3. write a half equation for formation of products and classify as an oxidation or reduction.
