Magna Carta and Responsibilities

• How was the Magna Carta created ?

  King John was forced to sign it in 1215,because the barons were angry with the high taxes and lack of ownership of land and rebelled to the point to the point where he had to sign it to stay king
• What were the Magna Carta rights and how they are carried out today ?

  • Kings could not demand taxes without an agreement from the barons .today taxes rise have to go through The house of Commons
  • Kings could not put barons on trial in secret they have to be tried by the peers (jury) ,today its the same
  • Everybody was subject to the law even the king ,today this is within the rule of law : no one is above the law
• What is the United Nations Convention of Rights of the Child?

  sets out rights for under 18s
• What does the central government do?

  consists of parliament ,MPs ,and Wesminister and they pass new laws and run the country
• What does the devolved government do ?

  Scotland ,Wales and Northern Ireland make their own desicions about somethings e.g.health and educations
• Who are the regional bodies ?

  the mayor,police and crime commissioners
• What does the local council do ?

  they have the responsibility for local services like rubbish collections,council taxes etc
• What are parish/town councils do ?

  they are responsible for certain services in town e.g allotments and car parks
• What are the Mayors roles and responsibility?

  they are elected by the public and they do ceremonial duties and chair meetings but cannot make decisions about council business
• What are the local councils roles and responsibility?

  they are elected by the public in local elections and represent a political party and their local area and they make decisions about services like housing
• What are the local officers roles and responsibility ?

  they work at the council but are not councillors.They are not voted in and arent members of political parties. They plan work,write policies but do not make decisions
• What is council tax ?

  everyone pays but the amount you pay depends on the value of your homes,its collected by local councils and then spent on services , roads
• What is business tax?

  if you own your own business ,you have to pay business rates based on the value of your business profit .Half goes to central government and half goes to local government
• What is central government grants ?


  local council receive money from central government to spend on local services like schools
• What other fees do local services pay for ?

  local councils will charge for a certain amount of money e.g.parking
