  • Paper Chromatography
A technique used to separate and identify the components of a mixture
  • Paper Chromatography Procedure
    1. Draw a horizontal line using pencil on chromatography paper
    2. Place the line 2cm from the bottom of the paper
    3. Mark five equal distance (cm) spots across the line
    4. Use a capillary tube to place a small spot of each unknown colour on the pencil spots
    5. Keep the spots small to ensure they don't spread into each other
    6. Pour 1cm depth of water (solvent) into a beaker
    7. Attach the paper to a glass rod using tape and lower it into the beaker
    8. Ensure the pencil line and spots are above the water surface (water will wash off the line)
    9. Ensure the paper side does not touch the beaker sides
    10. Place a lid on the beaker to reduce evaporation of the solvent
    11. The water will move up the paper and carry the colours with it
    12. Remove the paper once the solvent has moved 3/4 up the paper
