pH scale

• the pH shows how acidic a substance is and how alkaline it is
• it can be measured using a pH meter which give a numerical value of the pH of the solution
• alkaline substances have a higher pH than pure water above 7
• acidic solutions have a lower pH than pure water, below 7
• acidic solutions have a lower pH than pure water, below 7
• the pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 and 7 being neutral
• universal indicator is used to show the pH of a substance from red to purple red being acid green neutral and purple alkali
• pH can also be measured using an indicator and comparing the colour with a comparison chart
• indicator paper changes colour depending on the ph level of the solution it's put into
• a universal indicator will change colours as the pH increases or decreases
• the pH scale measures how strongly acidic or alkaline a solution is using a set of values

  • neutral solutions are exactly pH 7
  • acidic solutions are pH values less than 7 and the closer to pH 0 the more acidic
