Moraine
is a type of
landform
created when a
glacier
deposits material (
Till
) it has been transporting (e.g rocks from freeze thaw or plucking).
Moraine is made up of
unsorted
,
angular
rocks.
Terminal moraine is a
ridge
across the
valley
and made up of
glacial deposits
(
Till
) which is
unsupported.
As a glacier moves
downhill
it acts like a
bulldozer
pushing
sediment
in front of its
snout
as it goes.
Once it reaches
lower
altitudes or
higher
temperatures, the glacier
melts
, loses
power
and deposits the moraine.
Terminal moraine marks the
furthest
point the
glacier
reaches.
Once the ice has
retreated
the Terminal moraine may form a
natural dam
, creating a
ribbon lake.
