• 1775-1777 - US attempts to conquer North

  • The region got drawn into the American independence war
  • They American nationalist tried to invade the North, to include Canada into their independence claims
  • At on point they were successful in this, they took Montreal and attacked Québec
  • But they were not successful in mobilising the French population
  • → the French population thought they were better off with the British than with the Americans
  • → that was because the British respected their language, religion and property
• Hostility between the British colonies in Canada and the newly independent United Stats continued in the following years and decades.

  Britain was supporting the enemies of the US:

  • Britain supported Native Americans
  • Britain prevented trade US-France
