Explain
long
shore
drift.
Due to
long shore drift material
is constantly moved along the
coast line.
When coastline
changes direction
the
longshore drift
continues causing material to be
deposited
in a
long thin strip
not attached to the
coast
(
spit
).
If this
spit
moves in the direction of an
island
and
connects
the island to the
mainland
, a
tombolo
is formed.
Tombolo example:
Chesil
beach
connecting to
Isle
of
portland.
