Earth and Plates

Cards (11)

  • Layers of the Earth
  • Plate: A large slab of the earth's crust.
    Plate boundary: Where plates meet.
  • Crust: The thin outer layer of the earth, made up of solid rock.
  • Mantle: The thick layer below the crust that is mostly molten rock (magma).
  • Outer core: Consists of liquid nickel and iron - this is molten (Melted)
  • inner core - solid centre of the Earth, temperatures are really high. It can reach up to 6000°C
  • Plates separating - Volcanoes + mid ocean ridges
  • plates colliding - volcanoes and fold mountains
  • Plates sliding - earthquakes
  • Convection Currents
    1. The earth’s core heats the magma causing it to rise slowly up towards the crust.
    2. As the magma rises, it begins to cool
    3. The magma becomes heavier & sinks back down towards the core.
    4. The cycle repeats & causes circular movements of magma called convection currents
    5. It causes the plates to move very slowly
    6. The plates are dragged apart (separate/ diverge),pushed together (collide/converge) or slide (transform) past each other
