Layers
of the
Earth
Plate
: A large
slab
of the
earth's crust.
Plate boundary
: Where
plates meet.
Crust
: The
thin outer layer
of the
earth
, made up of
solid rock.
Mantle
: The
thick layer
below the
crust
that is mostly
molten rock
(
magma
).
Outer
core: Consists of
liquid
nickel and
iron
- this is
molten
(Melted)
inner
core - solid
centre
of the
Earth
,
temperatures
are really
high.
It can reach up to
6000°C
Plates separating -
Volcanoes
+
mid ocean ridges
plates colliding -
volcanoes
and
fold mountains
Plates
sliding
-
earthquakes
Convection Currents
The earth’s core
heats
the
magma
causing it to rise slowly up towards the crust.
As the magma rises, it begins to
cool
The magma becomes heavier & sinks back down towards the core.
The cycle repeats & causes circular movements of magma called convection currents
It causes the plates to move very slowly
The plates are dragged apart (separate/ diverge),pushed together (collide/converge) or slide (transform) past each other
