Glycolysis

Cards (4)

  • Oxygen acts as an acceptor of electrons at the end of the ETC
  • What are the products of glycolysis
4 ATP molecules and 2 reduced NAD molecules
  • What happens to the hydrogen molecules that were removed
NAD co enzymes accept the removed hydrogens and are then reduced forming two reduced NAD molecules
  • Stages of glycolysis
    1. Phosphorylation- requires 2 ATP molecules. Two phosphates are released from 2 ATP and attach to glucose forming hexose bisphosphate
    2. lysis- this destabilises the molecule causing it to split into two triose phosphate
    3. phosphorylation another phosphate group is added to each triose phosphate forming two triose bisphosphate. The phosphate ions are present in the cytoplasm.
    4. Two triose bisphosphate molecules then oxidised by the removal of hydrogen atoms (dehydrogenation) forming 2 pyruvate and 4 ATP
