  • What are the two types of prestige?
    Overt prestige:
    prestige assigned to forms of language which are considered correct/standard - usually used in formal speech
    Covert prestige:
    use of the vernacular and often patois (usually dialect of a particular region)
    expresses solidarity, community and group identity more than authority.
  • What is Received Pronunciation?
    standard form of British English pronunciation, based on educated speech in southern England, widely accepted as a standard elsewhere.
  • Received pronunciation phonetics
    RP is evident when speaker can produce a glottal stop - replace 't' before another consonant (e.g. football)
  • Received pronunciation syntax
    word order of RP can vary,
    'one must learn' as opposed to 'you must learn'
    'it is I' opposed to 'it is me'
    This is a form of overt prestige
  • Received pronunciation lexis
    High register words used in terms of lexis
    Dandy - (man concerned with his appearance)
    Expurgate - (purge/cleanse moral offense)
