Kerb cycle

Cards (7)

  • Where does the kerbs cycle take place
    The mitochondrial matrix
  • What does each cycle of the kerbs cycle break down
    A complete acetyl group
  • What happens to the hydrogen released
FAD and NAD pick them up
  • Kerb cycle steps
    1. Acetyl CoA delivers the acetyl group. The two carbon binds with four Carbon oxaloacetate to form six carbon citrate
    2. the citrate molecule undergoes decarboxylation and dehydrogenation producing one reduced NAD and a co2
    3. the now 5 carbon compound is further decarboxylated and dehydrogenation producing a 4 carbon compound co2 and reduced NAD
    4. the 4 carbon binds temporarily bind to coA and undergoes substrate level phosphorylation producing ATP
    5. 4 carbon is then dehyrogenated producing FAD and another 4 carbon molecule
    6. h
  • What are the products I. The kerbs cycle
1 ATP, 2 Carbon dioxide, 3 reduced NAD, 1 reduced FAD
  • What are co enzymes
They are required to transfer protons electrons and functional groups
  • What is the difference between FAD and NAD
NAD is involved in all stages of respiration FAD only the kerbs cycle
NAD accepts one hydrogen FAD accepts two
NAD is reduced at the start of the electron chain FAD is further along
reduced NAD synthesis 3 ATP molecules FAD synthesises 2 ATP molecules
