A significant proportion of theories within developmental psychology focus upon development during childhood, as this is the period during an individual's lifespan when the most change occurs
Since the early 1980s, developmental psychologists have become more interested in learning about children's moral judgements regarding telling the truth and lying
The research on children's moral development of lying was limited as it was conducted in western countries, so the findings could not be generalised as the children were raised in industrial environments that promoted competition
The children were shown a 7- point rating chart which contained the ratings: Very very good, Very good, good, Neither naughty nor good, naughty, Very naughty, Very very naughty
After explaining the chart, the stories were read aloud to individuals in a pre-arranged random order. They were read in the participants own language and presented alongside illustrations
After the deed section of the story was read aloud, the children were asked "was he/she good or naughty" and the child will respond verbally/non-verbally or both using the rating scale
The question was repeated after the second part of the story lie or truth-telling was read. The interviewer systematically alternated the words "good" and "naughty" in the questions
