What is the nervous system?
It enables humans to react to their
surroundings
and to coordinate their behaviour,
Central nervous system
(
CNS
) is the
brain
and
spinal cord
.
What does stimuli mean?
Change
in
environmental
conditions
such as
light
,
sound
and
temperature.
What is a receptor?
Specialised cell used to detect changes to the
environment
around them such as light, sound and temperature.
What is a sensory N?
Neurone
receiving infomation from the changing environment
What is a processor?
Areas of the brain that makes sense of the changes to the
environment
and decide on the
appropriate
course of action.
Whats are relay N?
REFLEXES ONLY
-
Neurone
that bypasses the brain and creates a rapid, automatic response to avoid danger
What is a Motor N?
Neurone
that causes a response to the changing surrounding environment
Whats an effector?
Area of the body that will bring about the response, either
muscles
contracting or glands secreting
hormones
What is a response?
Action taken by the
organism
What is a synapse?
A gap between 2
neurones
What is the process of the synapse?
An electrical impulse travels along the
axon
of the first
neurone
At the synapse, a chemical
neurotransmitter
is released
it diffuses across the synapse
When reaching the dendrite of the second neurone, it triggers a new electrical impulse
These are the
3
different types of
neurons
What is Homeostasis?
Maintaining a constant
internal environment
. Includes :
blood glucose levels
,
body temperature
, water content.
