atoms, compounds and molecules

Cards (13)

  • Atoms are the building block for everything
  • atoms form strong bonds with each other making molecules
  • a molecule is 2 or more atoms strongly bonded together
  • a pure substance is made from only one type of element this is listed on the periodic table
  • elements can combine to make compounds
  • an atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist and still be that element
  • when atoms of 2 or more elements bond they make a compounds
  • these clusters of compounds are called molecules
  • particle diagrams show the ratio the atoms in a compound are made up of.
  • elements are made of only one type of atom
  • atoms
atoms are the building block of all matter. Everything is made up of atoms. Atoms are the smallest particle of an element which is even to small for a microscope to see. The word particle can be used in many ways. it is a single piece of matter from an element or a compound. particles can be ; atoms, molecules, or ions
  • elements
an element is a pure substance which is made up of only one type of atom. Everything in the universe contains the atoms of one or more elements. The atoms in one element are all the same as one another, but are different from any other type of element
  • molecules
molecules are made when two or more atoms are chemically bonded together. Atoms from different elements can combine. When atoms are different elements, the molecule can be called a compound.
