  • In 1945 there were fewer than 20,000 non white residents in the UK
  • In the 1950’s and 60’s non-white immigrants came from former British colonies in the Caribbean, Africa and Indian subcontinents
  • 1950’s - 60’s : immigrants often faced with discrimination in housing, education and services
  • 1956 survey in Birmingham found that only 1.5% of white citizens would be willing to let a room to a black tenant
  • 2010 the race relation act was replaced by the Equality act which focused on all areas of discrimination 
  • 1987 British attitudes survey found that 39% of people were racially prejudice, this was then redone in 2017 and it was found that 26% of people were racially prejudiced
  • 66% of over 65’s ethnic minorities said racial prejudice in lower than in 1968
  • 1976 Race relations act -  individuals gained the ability to take discrimination complaints directly to civil courts or industrial tribunals
  • 1968 Race relations act - defines discriminations as treating a person less favourable than another person on grounds of colour, race, ethnic or national origins in the provision to the public of goods, facilities, services and employment and housing
  • 1965 Race relations act - made it a civil offence to refuse to serve a person, to serve someone with unreasonable delay, or to overcharge on the grounds of colour, race or ethnic or national origins
