• In the 20th century the law continued to be enforced against gay men. By 1954 there were over 1000 men in prison as a result
• 1967 act decriminalised sexual activity in private between men over the age of 21
• 2/3 of the population see nothing wrong with same sex relationships
• Individualism - individuals have the right to choose how to live their lives so long as they do not harm others
• Secularisation - declining influence of religion in people's lives, attitudes and values.
• Less than half of Britons now believe in god which impacts on people's view of same sex relationships as religion was a common reason for negativity towards same sex relationships
• 1994 - age of consent was moved from 21 to 18
• 2000 - age of consent was moved from 18 - 16
• 2005 - civil partnerships were made legal
• 2013 - gay marriage was legalised
