Solutions and effectiveness

    Cards (12)

    • Solution: Effectiveness is how these flashcards are laid out
    • The M74 extension pass near Glasgows CBD: Takes through traffic away from city centre reducing congestion. For years Kingston Bridge was a new centre for congestion and the M74 extension in 2013 has reduced congestion on the Kingston Bridge and the M8
    • The M74 downside: Destroyed houses and people needed to be relocated
    • Pedestrianised zones (e.g. Buchanan street) in 1960s to alter traffic movement throughout the city: Safer place for shoppers and less traffic in central areas where shops are.
    • Most roads made one way to reduce traffic congestion at junctions: Works well as you can get 2-3 lanes going in one direction increasing traffic flow. May be difficult to drive through city if you are unfamiliar
    • Bus lanes and cycle lanes provided on most main routes into CBD: Buses can travel into CBD far quicker than before. Safer for cyclists. May inconvenience travellers if buses are delayed or cancelled
    • Multi story car parks in shopping centres (e.g. St Enoch Centre): Keeps cars from parking on roads which increases traffic flow, can be expensive to park in city centre car parks
    • Glasgow has biggest city train network in Scotland: Makes it easy to get to Glasgow without a car, allows efficient travel in and out of Glasgow in all of west central Scotland
    • Glasgow also has a underground network as well: Allows efficient transport around Glasgow with many stations around Glasgow (e.g. Ibrox)
    • Restricted parking (single/double yellow lines): Keeps streets clear for maximum traffic flow, single lines allow parking for residents at night when traffic is low, allows more effective flow of traffic during peak times
    • Park and ride schemes outside of CBD (leave car for small fee and travel into city centre via public transport): Is effectively encouraging use of public transport, therefore reduces traffic congestion in CBD. However regular fare increases discourages people
    • The new mass automated cycle hire (mach) scheme, has installed permanent bike stations at 31 locations around the city which should encourage people to rent out bikes: Is a new initiative which appears to be effective in reduces traffic congestion and pollution, however still to early to assess effectiveness properly
