ozymandias VS london

Cards (7)

  • ozymandias and london both look at the reign of the powerful and criticise it however ozymandias highlights how their power does not last forever while in london this power leads to the long lasting suffering of the people.
  • the quote "shattered visage lies" will be compared to "mind forged manacles"
  • in the second paragraph the quote "cold command" will be compared to "blood......palace walls"
  • in Ozymandias the sonnet structure is inconsistent showing how power is inconsistent. There's also iambic pentameter showing the beginning and end of the heartbeat(every life most come to an end even the most powerful). Capitalisation of every new line shows change is the only consistency one can have.
  • in London the use of quatrains depicts a structured power like a prison that traps people of London therefore pain is a consistency within the poem possibly suggesting people in power stay in power as opposed to Ozymandias which highlights the change in who holds power(all is temporary). The alternate rhyme scheme represents the walking around London and how despite the changes in focus/scenes the suffering remains no matter where the poet looks.
  • Shelley was a romantic poet whom criticised people in power so a rebel/revolutionary at the time.
  • Blake's poem was written during the "reign of terror" and at a time where the French Revolution inspired the proletariat to seize power from the privileged. His poetry was politically focused.
