  • Rapid bus transport corridors (transcarioca) = two exclusive road lanes for buses which opened in 2014, connecting two parts of the city
  • Transcarioca: Reduces delays, helps buses run smoother, roads are still very congested with cars however the bus corridors have been a huge success with two more planned
  • Cycle lanes ("Bike rio" scheme) = Rio encouraging the use of bikes by installing many bike racks and rental points throughout the city, also the addition of cycle lanes and paths to the city network
  • Bike rio scheme: Better for environment and has reduced cars on the road
  • Subway = The subway had undergone expansion in 2004. Currently three subway lines which span over 58km with 41 stations.
  • Subway: The extension of the subway in 2004 has been a huge success as it increased the average amount of subway users per day by 230,000. Only accounts for 5% of all journeys in Rio.
  • Gondola/ Cable car (e.g. in complexo do alemao favela) = complexo do alemao has a 3.5km long cable car system constructed, providing 6 stations along the favela
  • Gondola/ Cable car (e.g. in complexo do alemao favela) = Journey from favela to town has decreased from 1 hour 30 minutes to to 16 minutes, locals get free return tickets, capacity of 30,000 people per day, cheaper than bulldozing houses and building new roads and also compensating residents for relocation, half the price of a bus ticket and faster journey
  • Linha Amarelo yellow line express way (motorway) = Connects Barra da Tijuca to the international airport
  • Linha Amarelo yellow line expressway (motorway): Reduced congestion by 40% in Rio CBD by taking some traffic congestion away. Cut the journey time from CBD to suburbs by 45 minutes
  • Elevado do joa dual carriageway = Two new tunnels have been dug through the hills that separate Barra da Tijuca (home of the olympic park) to the CBD, and a 5km two lane elevated road has been built. Connecting CBD to Barra da Tijuca
  • Elevado do joa dual carriageway: Increases traffic capacity by 30% and reduced journey time by 60%. To ease congestion further the road operates as a one way system during peak rush hour times (in morning towards CBD and at night towards Barra da Tijuca)
