  With a fall in the sea level during Pleistocene glaciations, river channels excavated deeply into the estuary, and deposited sediments offshore. 

  As the sea level rose during the Holocene vast quantities of sediment were then moved onshore. 

  The rise in sea level slowed and about 6000 years ago a coastline very similar to the one evident today came into existence.
