Gley soil profile

Cards (6)

  • This is what a gley soil profile looks like: 4 layers and a layer of permafrost (lower B Horizon)
  • Ao Horizon: Vegetation is shrubs, slow decomposing leaf litter, acidic (mor) humus, precipitation > evaporation, gentle relief hinders drainage
  • A Horizon: Dark brown/grey colour, build up of organic material/peat, anaerobic conditions and little soil Biota so distinct layers
  • B Horizon: Waterlogged, blue/grey colour, rock fragments
  • Lower B Horizon: Permafrost impedes drainage
  • C Horizon: Impermeable parent material (clay), has clay texture
