Consequences of youthful (growing) populations

• In urban areas an increase in population leads to pressure on housing. May lead to the expansion of informal housing with poor sanitation leading to rapid spread of disease
• A larger total population could put a strain on food and water resources, leading to land being farmed more intensively leading to degradation. Degradation may result in famine and death
• Due to increase in people of child bearing ages, the population will continue to increase. Significant investment needed for maternity hospitals
• Significant population increase may result in high unemployment in the future
• Building more schools and training more teachers is needed otherwise children may not receive an education. If the young population does not receive an education it would lower literacy rates and hinder future development of the country
• There will be a much larger potential workforce which may attract multinational companies to the country. This may increase tax revenue for the government
• Governments may need to invest in family planning education. Government policies may promote smaller families or encourage emigration to reduce the overpopulation problems
