The emigree

Cards (4)

  • 'I am branded by an impression of sunlight'
identity = Whatever bad news she hears, she only recalls sunlight and beauty. Extended metaphor of sunlight creates a warm image of how she was content. Juxtaposition of negative 'branded' with a positive memory = shouldn't be happy as she had to flee. 'branded' suggests the permanence
  • 'time rolls it's tanks/ frontiers rise between us'
damaged identity = Time is presented as an enemy as it steals her identity. Tanks represent physical conflict at her home and time being destructive. Frontiers rising is the separation of the lands - the one the poet left and the one she is at now.
  • 'It tastes of sunlight'
literacy techniques to show importance of identity = she can't get it off her mind. Despite it being banned she wont stop thinking back to her country. Vivid imagery shows she only sees the light in her country and wont get rid off her identity.
  • 'I comb it's hair and love its shining eyes'
reflects of her memory = first 2 stanzas have 8 lines, but the last stanza has 9 showing she can't let go of her past. Her city is personified as a doll. It's eyes shine and she only sees the purity, like a mother who sees the good in her child despite its sins. She is nurturing her city and memories as they are special
