  • During a Privy Council meeting, he turned their back on Elizabeth and she hit him on the side of the head causing Essex to nearly draw his sword. This made the Queen put Essex on house arrest.
  • As a redeeming chance, the Queen sent Essex to Ireland to deal with the Irish Rebellion. Instead of defeating them, he made a truce - directly against Elizabeth's orders. Upon his return, he rushed to the Queen's chambers and caught her without her wig on.
  • Due to his failure in Ireland, Queen refused to renew his sweet-wine monopoly, causing him to lose his money and influence.
