  • Setting up the centre lathe
    • Ensure the power is off
    • Load the material securely into the chuck, using the chuck key and make sure to remove it before turning the lathe on
    • Place the correct tool into the tool post
    • Make sure the tool is set at the correct height
    • Make sure the speed is set correctly for the material and process you are using
    • Place the guard down into position
    • Test the stop and emergency stop buttons
  • parallel & step turning - used to reduce the diameter of the metal along it's length
  • taper turning - produces a conical shape on the metal
  • facing off - used to level the end of a piece of metal
  • parting off - used to remove or part pieces of metal on the lathe
  • knurling - produces a diamond pattern with provides grip
  • drilling:
    • A centre drill is used to create a small hole in the centre of the metal workpiece
    • A twist drill bit is then used to create a hole to the correct size & depth, using the centre hole as guidance
