  • Keen to exploit racism to gain re-election- Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus ordered Arkansas national guard to keep the students out
  • An abusive white mob surrounded the students as they tried to enter the school
  • Fearing the breakdown of law & order- President Eisenhower reluctantly sent in troops to protect them
