  • the religious settlement had 2 main goals:

  • The religious settlement was made up of:

  • the act of supremacy 1559:
    • made Elizabeth Supreme Governor
    • re-established royal supremacy
    • Oath of Supremacy to be taken by all Clergy
    • Mary's heresy laws repealed
    • Visitations utilised to seek out heresy
  • the royal visitations were enabled by the Act of Supremacy and meant 125 commissioners visited parishes to seek out heresy
    Visitations and the oath of supremacy led to 400 - 2000 Marian Clergy losing their jobs
    But visitations did mostly focus on the high members of the clergy
  • the act of uniformity was mostly about the appearance (uniform) of the church and clergy
  • The act of Uniformity 1559:
    • introduced new book of common prayer which allowed for interpretation, importantly for the Eucharist
    • Church interiors and clothing of the Clergy should be the same as in 1548
    • Communion to be taken at tables instead of altars
    • Crucifixes and other items could be placed on the tables
  • The Royal injunctions:
    *important parts
    • Church should be protestant and 'superstition' should be rooted out
    • religion shouldn't be disputed in public
    • Every parish must have an English bible and Erasmus' paraphrases
    • preachers had to use prescribed sermons
    • the clergy could marry with permission of 2 JP's and a Bishop
