  • Undiagrammatic/Linear Notes
    Notes that employ the use of prose (words only), linear in nature and not arranged in a particular way
  • Paraphrasing
    Changing the wording of a text so that it is significantly different from the original source without changing the meaning
  • Good paraphrased sentence
    • Has a different structure to the original
    • Has mainly different vocabulary
    • Retains the same meaning
    • Keeps some phrases from the original text that are in common use
  • To paraphrase a sentence
    1. Change vocabulary by using synonyms
    2. Change word class
    3. Change the word order
  • Summary
    Reducing information by condensing it to a suitable length, could be a one-sentence outline or a full paragraph
  • Quotation
    Copying a passage of someone else's words and crediting the source
  • Quotation requirements
    • The quoted text is enclosed in quotation marks or formatted as a block quote
    • The original author is correctly cited
    • The text is identical to the original
  • Diagrammatic/Patterned Notes
    Notes with distinctive patterns using colours, tables, charts, diagrams, etc.
  • Advantages of patterned notes
    • Stimulates the mind and aids memory
    • Concise due to limited use of words
    • New ideas and information can easily be inserted
    • Revision is made easier as their uniqueness aids recall
  • Outline
    Use of numbering or lettering and indentation to distinguish between headings and subheadings
  • Concept map

    A diagram in which ideas are linked to each other by lines, usually starting from the middle of the page and working outwards
  • Contrast box

    A table used to show differences between two different concepts
  • Venn diagram

    A diagram used to show both differences and similarities between two or more concepts
  • Hierarchical array
    A patterned note used to show the order of importance of a concept either from top to bottom or bottom to top
  • Linear array

    A form of patterned notes that helps students visualize gradations of meaning between two related words
