  • A pure substance is a substance made up of only 1 element or compound.
  • Pure substances have a fixed melting and boiling point whereas mixtures (impure substances) melt and boil over a range of temperatures.
  • A compound is a substance that is made up of atoms from at least 2 different elements chemically bonded together.
  • Solute + Solvent = Solution
  • Solute - the substance that dissolves in the solvent.
  • Solvent - a liquid that dissolves the solute.
  • Solution - a mixture made up of a substance (solute) being dissolved in another (solvent).
