Benedicts Test (sugars)

Cards (4)

  • Before performing a test, break up your food sample and place it in a beaker with distilled water until some of the food sample is dissolved. Then filter out the solution with a funnel to remove solid bits of food that we don't need. The solution we end up with is now our sample.
  • There are two types of sugars, reducing and non-reducing.
  • The benedicts test only tests for reducing sugars.
    1. Transfer 5cm3 of sample to test tube
    2. Prepare a water bath at 75 degrees celcius
    3. Add 10 drops of benedicts solution to test tube
    4. Place test tube in water bath for 5 minutes
    5. For safety, place test tube in test tube holder and face it away from yourself and others
    6. If reducing sugars are present the solution should change from blue to green, yellow or brick red depending on the concentration.
