Iodine test (starch)

• Before performing a test, break up your food sample and place it in a beaker with distilled water until some of the food sample is dissolved. Then filter out the solution with a funnel to remove solid bits of food that we don't need. The solution we end up with is now our sample.
• Starch is a carbohydrate
• 1. Take 5cm3 of food sample and add a few drops of iodine solution
  2. The solution should turn a brown-orange colour
  3. Give the solution a gentle shake
  4. If starch is present the solution will turn blue-black
