Before performing a test, break up your food sample and place it in a beaker with distilled water until some of the food sample is dissolved. The solution we end up with is now our sample.
Add 5cm3 of your unfiltered solution to a test tube
Add 3 drops of the Sudan III solution
Gently shake the solution
As the lipid separates from the water as it isn't soluble there should be a bright red layer at the top
