  • What is conformity?
    A type of social influence referring to the change of beliefs and actions to members of a group. This group is known as the majority.
  • What is a confederate?
    An actor that takes part in an experiment
  • What are the three conformities?
    Compliance, identification and internilisation
  • What is compliance in conformity?
    This is a temporary type of conformity where we follow the actions of a group/others but privatley disagree with these actions. This behaviour only lasts aslong as the group is watching otherwise it stops.
  • What is identification in conformity?
    This is a moderate type of conformity where we value the group and its members and thus want to be apart of it however we may not agree with everthing the group believed but don't speak up about it.
  • What is internalisation in conformity?
    This is a deep reaching conformity where we take on the view of the majority because we accept it as correct and continue to follow it in the groups absense.
  • What is informational social influence?
    This is when someone conforms because they want to be right, so they look to others by copying or obeying them to have the correct answer in a situation. It usually leads to internalisation and occurs in situations where we do not have the knowledge to make our own decision
  • What is normative social influence?
    This is when someone conforms because they want to be liked and be part of a group. This often occurs when a person wants to avoid the emarrassing situation of disagreeing with the majority.
  • What are the two explanations for conformity?
    Normative social influence and Informational social influence.
