evaluating DAT

Cards (4)

  • SUPPORTING RE - learn cb through observing others
} Bandura - Bobo Doll = children observed adult role model play aggressively / not with bobo doll and other toys
    > agg condition = modelled physical + verbal aggressive b and more likely to play with toy gun
    > control = little natural tendency for aggressive play
    - sug - ppl = little natural inclination towards aggressive behaviour (disputes bio exp)
    - demonstrates = learn agg / cb through interactions with ppl who engage in b
  • SUPPORTING RE - learn from ppl we're close to
    } Osborn + West = 40% sons with c dads committed crime by 18
    - comp = 13% sons with non c dads
    > sug = dads = powerful influence on son's attitudes towards c
    > f can be explained by inherited criminality
  • CORRELATION NOT CAUSATION - supp RE = correlational
} Cox et al = not possible to measure strength and no. of associates and the effect this has on development of attitudes towards crime
    - difficult to conduct experimental research into DAT
    - reliance on correlational data > direction of relationship (ppl we associate with and our cb) = difficult to establish
    - DAT - argue = pro-crime associates cause cb > but could be because our existing inclination towards cb = means we see criminal associates
  • REDUCTIONIST - DAT doesn't account for all kinds of c
    - c like rape + murder = impulsive, fuelled by rage / passions - rather - developing overtime through observing others and trying B
    - DAT - may only exp cb that develops overtime (motives / techniques for robbery)
    - alt exp = bio - need to be considered to explain sudden / impulsive cb
