Whitechapel is an area in London's
East End.
Between 1870 and
1900
Whitechapel was an area of extreme
poverty
and a place where lots of different types of people lived.
Some parts of Whitechapel were known as
rookeries.
Rookeries were areas filled with
lodging
houses in which some of the poorest people lived in terribly
overcrowded
conditions.
