    • Between 1870 and 1900 Whitechapel was an area of extreme poverty and a place where lots of different types of people lived.
    • Some parts of Whitechapel were known as rookeries.
    • Rookeries were areas filled with lodging houses in which some of the poorest people lived in terribly overcrowded conditions.
