• electrophoresis is the migration of charged particles through an electrical field
• • Chromatography - group of techniques used to separate complex mixtures on the basis of different physical interactions between the individual compounds and the stationary phase of the system

• components of chromatography are called phases
• • mobile phase - solvent; wicks up the stationary phase; can be gas or liquid; carries sample through the stationary phase
• • Stationary phase - “blotter” or support medium; defined as the phase through which the sample and the mobile phase flows
• • Column - holds all of the other phases in the proper orientation
• as the sample wicks up the stationary phase in chromatography, the sample is separated into its individual components
