  • Continuous belt transect is a quadrat is placed alongside the tape, so a small area is sampled, e.g. 0.5m^2; after the first sample, the quadrat is flipped over, so that the next area is sampled, etc
  • Interrupted belt transect is a quadrat is placed at set distances along the line e.g. every 2 metres; saves time on long transects
  • Advantages: useful when habitat shows clear environmental gradient (e.g. grassland to woodland), disadvantage: only species on the line/belt are recorded - underestimate
