freikorps

• Freikorps was established in november 1918
• 10,000 soldiers demobalised after WW1
• These soldiers were not provided with jobs, housing or provisions
• Created "Freikorps" who were 'free' from order
• By March 1919, over 250,000 armed Freikorps were roaming the streets of Germany and fought against the Bavarian Socialist Republic
• In 1919, they murdered Hugo Haase, one of Chancellor Ebert's men
• From 1919-1922 about 376 political murders were caused by the Freikorps but not one right-wing assassin was convicted
• The judicial severely sympathised with the freikorps allowing them to get away with many acts
