Harold received word that William had finally landed in Pevensey

Harold's army had significantly decreased in numbers (around 7 thousand) and was exhausted from the fast march North and the Battle of Stanford Bridge, South again
William brought with him a new Norman invasion - castles
William quickly built a castle in Pevensey which he used as a base to raid the South from, forcing Harold's move
When Harold reached London, he waited for a week to gather more of the Fyrd, giving William more time to prepare
