Surgical Causes of Reduced Lung Volume

• Surgical Causes of Reduced Lung Volume:

  • Recumbency - lying supine for hours -> decrease in lung compliance -> decrease in lung volume
  • Absorption atelectasis - not enough nitrogen in gas complex when O2 provided to patients -> reduced alveoli patency
  • Pain - we don't want to take deep breaths -> reduced FRC -> reduced lung volume -> reduced compliance
  • Diaphragmatic dysfunction
  • Immobility
  • ↓ MCT -> sputum retention -> areas of sputum plugging -> atelectasis
