Required practical : Rate of reactions

Cards (3)

  • What do you need to investigate in the required practical of the rate of reactions?
Investigate how changes in concentration affect the rates of reactions by both measuring the volume of a gas produced and monitoring a change in colour or turbidity
  • What is activity 1 of the required practical - Rates of Reaction
    • React sodium thiosulfate and dilute hydrochloric acid
    • Time how long it takes for the cross to disappear (this happens because sulfur is produced which is an insoluble solid)
    • Repeat with different concentrations of Sodium thiosulfate
    • As the concentration of sodium thiosulfate is increases, the rate of reaction will increases, this is because there will be more frequent, successful collisions
  • What is activity 2 of the required practical - Rates of Reaction

    • i would draw a labelled diagram if you are asked to write a method
    • The measuring cylinder will be filled with water and then inverted into a trough full of water
    • A delivery tube is connected to the conical flask by a bung and the other end underneath the measuring cylinder
    • Place the acid in the conical flask, followed by the magnesium ribbon, replace the bung quickly so that you do not lose any of the gases produced
    • Record the volume of gases at different time intervals
    • Repeat with different concentrations of acid
    • As the concentrations of hydrochloric acid is increased the rate of reactions will increase, this is because there will be more frequent, successful collisions
