• one of the main functions is to break down harmful substances like drugs and alcohol
• drugs and alcohol are broken down into less harmful substances which then can be carried around your body to then be removed
• hepatic artery -> provides liver with oxygenated blood to supply oxygen for respiration to provide lots of energy
• hepatic vein -> takes deoxygenated blood away from the liver
• hepatic portal vein -> brings blood from duodenum and ileum, so it is rich in products of digestion. meaning that if any harmful substances are ingested it is broken down immediately
• ileum - part of the small intestine
• bile duct -> takes bile to the gall bladder to be stored
